TIPS: Being an awesome suspending minnow can be great
in deeper waters but when chasing fish in less than 30cm of water your
snag rates increase. Changing the trebles to a smaller size can make
your suspending lure into a slow floating one which comes in handy when
you hit the bottom during your retrieve. Also coating your lure with a
wax/paraffin based fish attractant can increase the floating rate even
more.
TECHNIQUES: Being a slender minnow type lure, many
different retrieves can be used to mimic swimming or injured baitfish. A
slow rolling retrieve is one of the best techniques, letting the lure's
action and built in rattle do the work. Adding a pause makes good use of
the suspending feature of the lure and allows feeding fish to attack as
they do to schooled bait fish. Combine these pauses with small twitches
of your rod tip, to vary your lures action tricking predators into
attacking. Another good technique is to cast out and when your lure
first hits the water, try a fast initial retrieve for the first 5-10
metres, called "burning", which can trigger fish into attacking as this
action mimics fleeing baitfish and can sometimes draw attention to the
area. Follow this with your slow rolling retrieve and a strike is
inevitable.
