Damiki Monster Miki 2.5" Soft Plastic Review

DAMIKI MONSTER MIKI 2.5"

INTRODUCTION: The Monster Miki 2.5"is the latest soft plastic out of the Damiki stables. Looking like something out of a Sci-Fi movies, it's many tentacles and moving appendages will certainly attract ravenous fish during a feeding frenzy. It's soft texture and shrimp like scent will make it a great plastic when fishing around structure and also long shallow flats where curious fish tend to follow their prey before attacking.

IMPRESSIONS: Having used my fair share of soft plastics, straight out of the package the Monster Miki resembles a more pliable and slender Berkley Bulky Hawg. Being a creature bait, my first thoughts are how good these plastics will be around pontoons and pylons mimicking a creature inhabiting these areas fossicking for food who are a prime target for cruising predators. Damiki is a relatively new player to the Australian lure market but has bought a wide range of products from soft plastics, like the Monster Miki and GRUB range to hardbody lures and blades.

FIELD TEST:
We were keen to use these plastics in a canal system to see their effectiveness in a structure situation. We rigged the Monster Miki on several different TT Jigheads as we were fishing in waters from 1 foot (At the base of the pontoon's walkway) to 9 feet (At the face of the pontoon). We chose 1/40 TT HWS Jigheads which has a slow sink rate for our shallow presentation and 1/20 TT Jigheads for our deeper bite. Due to the Damiki's slender body, we chose a size 2 hook as this will maximise the hook up rate as the plastic is likely to get inhaled by feeding fish. Our chosen testing ground is canal system of Pelican Waters at Caloundra, which is 45 mins north of Brisbane and has an abundance of oyster encrusted pontoons and resident boat hulls. The outfit used for our test was a Samurai Reaction 201 7"rod matched with a Team Daiwa Sol 2500 spooled with Unitika 8lb PE. Our choice of leader during this test was Sunline FC Rock in 3lb as we wanted to keep the presentation as finite as we could.

APPLICATION: As previously stated the Damiki Monster Miki would be great to use when fishing around structure like pylons, pontoons and boat hulls. After watching the Miki's swimming action during a lifting retrieve, I believe this plastic will also be effective when fishing shallow rubble or sandy flats as it's flailing appendages would attract curious fish feeding in these areas. We found the best retrieve for the Monster Miki was a twitch, pause, twitch as it's action was busy enough due to it's several tentacles.

EFFECTIVENESS: We found the Monster Miki to be pretty effective around pontoons when aiming our casts around the sides and front of them. We tried to skip these plastics into some tight areas but found it's several arms inhibited it's skipping ability by catching too much water. During our test period we were able to pull several fish including six bream (biggest 28cm to the fork), two whiting and one flathead (48cm). This shows that the Miki not only was an attractive bream bait but it also appealed to several other species including small chopper tailor.
